The Conference Room has horizontal banded windows that start small and grow bigger as you go up the wall. Our space's concept was about layering, growth, and beginnings. Though it was hard for us to put into words our exact concept, we showed the techniques we used and the thought process we had in each room. Technically, growth and beginnings could be another way of describing how "layers" work.

The Private Office stands out the most from the other spaces. We thought that was okay because we wanted for the private and public spaces to be distinguished. In order to avoid a barrier between the person working in the office and a client, we designed a desk that had an opening towards the seating. This draws the client in instead of blocking them out. We dropped down a block of ceiling for a more personal feel, but left room around the edges so that when the light on top of the ceiling is on, you can still see the trusses above. We didn't want to eliminate the trusses all-together.

The training room has offset walls, windows that grow with increasing verticality, and dropped down panes of glass with lighting attached. All of this relates to the concept of layers and growth from new beginnings.

This is a look at the presentation on the wall.

This is a rendered Floor Plan of the whole building. Walnut Bamboo flooring that contrasts the pastel walls and vibrant chair colors. This all represents the new beginnings associated with springtime and with the clients.

This is a representation of the logo we came up with for CNNC. We wanted to show diversity and the coming together of people while also portraying the new beginnings they share. They're depths vary to reinforce the idea of layers. The springtime colors are what represent our beginning.

This is showing where the drywall in the Training Room would meet one of the trusses on the ceiling. Basically, it would just be cut around the truss... like the walls in the Materials Library.

This shows the molding and the window near the floor in the Conference Room. The same molding is used throughout the building.

This is a perspective of our seemingly theoretical Reception Desk. Acting more as a Reception Sculpture, our intent was to be outside the box of a regular "desk"... however it got poor reviews. More thought should have been taken into the actual use for this center. Also, people and props would have been more useful if we wanted to really argue our position. Time strikes again! :-(

This is our "Title" on our board. It is inspired from our logo. Complete with Braggadocio font that was supposed to sort of carry the rays from the sun. Not too obviously.

Our materials board better resembles the color palette used in this project. Having experimented with a new media, getting the right colors on our rendered Perspectives, Sections, and Axonometric Drawings was surprisingly difficult.

We used the windows in this model of the Conference Room to emphasis the building of layers. Also, we wanted to create light near the floor, so we placed the thin strip close to the ground.

This model shows the Private Office. I believe it would have been beneficial to carry our layering to the exterior of the building instead of shying away from the concept in order to not disrupt the exterior facade.

This is the model of the Training Room. We offset the walls, which evidently reinforced our concept of building upon layers. The bands of windows thin out at about 7' above the floor. Lighting was placed on the small surface where the top part shifts over from the bottom.

Graphic Design Styles

This ad demonstrates the Nostalgic Remix style of graphic design with its patterning that takes up most of the shot. The chairs below it correspond directly to the patterning with their coloring and even shape. The green floor compliments the dominantly rosey red composition.
This ad demonstrates the Retro Modern style with its old school features and its bold outlines. The colors and concept fit in with the retro era. The sharp geometric shapes add life and movement to the character.
This ad is considered Pop Art with its bright cartoon-like appearance. It looks like a spiderman transformation with a skyscraper behind him. Self-explanatory, I suppose.
I chose this ad to represent the Bauhaus style of graphic design. It's off-centered and sporatic placements with not-too-outrageous colors seemed to fit this style. I'm not positive though.

Wow. So, tracing this subway picture was fun, tedious, and well-worth the effort! I wasn't sure about a lot of things, like where to fade colors, when to use the lights and darks, but I think it looks cool nonetheless. I'm ready to do more in Illustrator. The hardest part was converting it to a JPEG...

The idea was to take the man-made object and the natural object and have them opposing one another in a "face-off" position... to make a kind of "man versus machine" ad. But, when finding words to add to the ad, I changed the mood to have the fork seem like it was inspired from the stick... What do you think?

Anna Polan, formerly known as, Ania Piecyzkolan
Anna's grandfather came to the USA in the 20's and had 3 kids here. He then went back to Poland and had more children there. After the war, the citizens of the USA were allowed to come back, so she came back in 1967. Her siblings who were currently residing in the USA sponsored her to come back, which guaranteed a job/school. Her reason for coming to the USA was for economical reasons. Post-war, 5 of them basically lived in one room with no bathroom or showers. Housing was much cheaper here.Her dad was the first to come and three other sisters came later.

Her parents had to work in the factories and “sweatshops” and her goal was to not have to do that. She didn’t want to have to work hard labor like them. Her primary goal was to get an education and not have to worry about money.

Her life wasn’t that much different after she came to the USA
-she lived in a Polish community
-first thing her dad bought was a car
-everything was still based around family
-they traveled a lot more once they got here because they had a car

She describes her biggest challenge as a culture shock. It wasn’t what was expected. She had a vision of “gold on the streets” but it wasn’t clean and it wasn’t as easy as she thought it was gonna be. She basically came with 25 dollars and everything her mother could pack.

George is now the Vice President of Research and Development for Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Company. Anna works as a nurse for Cancer Centers of the Carolinas. They had four children together.

Pattern Perception

When I began this project, I realized that all of the things we had gone over in class that seemed so simple were no longer in my brain. So, with much confusion, I used a building by Frank Gehry to resemble a plant-like form from nature. I used the actual building to represent petals and the fullness of a blossom while using background details to make branch-like forms around the "flowers". Once some of the techniques came back to me, it was easier to start manipulating the image the way I intended... with a few start-overs. :-)

Beginning with research on Chile:

The Condor and Huemul shared a spot on the Chilean coat of arms. Both animals are found amongst the Andes Mountains.

I decided to use my mat between rooms on the interior of the house.

Using linear pieces of material, I decided to twist in order to create different textures.

IAR 212 Computing In Architectural Design

The article, Computing in Architectural Design, is about how computers and computer programs have advanced and are being used to help humans and designers in their work and everyday lives. Even in the ancient times people were finding ways to compute things. The most common tools used then were the compass and the straightedge. Computations were based off of the proportions of the human figure and it’s ability to fit inside such shapes as the circle and the square. The first computer-aided design was used by engineers to determine the physics behind materials and forces that make up buildings. Computer systems began to appear for architecture purposes in the 1970’s. The programs allowed for the creation of rooms that had optimal space arrangements and square rooms that could be used to create a floor plan. These early computers were large and expensive and required expensive display hardware as well. The first CAD-like software was written for the rising Apple II, then the Macintosh. It had drafting systems including MacDraft, MacDraw, Dreams, MiniCAD, and PowerDraw. However, the quality was not advanced enough for professional architectural drafting. Soon, other companies began trying to develop professional quality CAD programs. At first, the systems were too slow and were prone to crashing a lot, but with faster processors, they improved. With improving technology, architects could use programs not only for drafting, but for designing and showing clients realistic renderings of space. The new programs were less specific and more general than the previous ones and lacked details like doors, windows, and columns. The third-generation CAD systems referenced the first-generations more because they were centered around the architectural objects that were part of the design and not just the structure. Computers are tools used by people to be able to visualize what would otherwise be impossible to see without having already constructed the project. This can reveal things to them that they can fix and alter that they would not have originally been able to see. The article talks about computers being infused with intelligence in order to become something more than a telephone or a fax machine. In fact, they are seen as better than their human creator because of their unlimited patience, memory, speed, and things which humans are not able to continue to do for eternity. They are put to use in a way that makes it seem like they are responding to our physical presence (i.e. automatic doors). But the computer itself is an inhabitable physical environment. They are becoming more and more of an everyday part of our lives in the form of cell phones, cars, air conditioners… etc. The fact that the space is nonphysical raises questions about the activities that occur within them. Computers will most likely become even more prevalent and advanced in the future. Perhaps making our lives even easier.

Connections to History

The Close To Home exhibit in the gallery of the Gatewood Studio Arts Building seems to be centered around the idea of connections. The structure is built purely of strips of wood that are connected to each other with bars that have each end embedded in a piece of wood. This concept fits since the goal of the project was to make a connection and a tribute in memory of Edward Loewenstein.

When walking into the space, the dim lighting and towering structures draw you in and lead you around the area. It feels like a fortress above you that would make for an easy hiding place. The natural colors reinforced the already natural colors that were pre-existing in the gallery. The wood and metal is reminiscent of architecture because of their link to strength and sustainability. The wooden planks on the top of the structure made an interesting view in relationship to the recessed concrete cubes in the ceiling.

The structures reflect Modernism with their “stripped away,” facades. The material is used as the decoration instead of having it applied. With all of the images in the space, you get a feeling for the spaces that Loewenstein designed in his day. Many of the spaces correspond directly to the inspirations and process work done by the students. The most interesting and eye-catching images in the installation were the digital images of the living spaces done by the Art students.

Some of the images were extremely realistic-looking and they had you staring at them to find each detail within the image. Personally, I found that as I encountered the space, I would tend to start from the right and make my way to the left. I would rarely spend time in the back-right area within the exhibit. Perhaps if entering from the left side, I would be more prone to venture to the right side. All of the connections, moving pictures, digital images, photography, text, and catchy comments on the boards came together to create a visual treat that was able to be experienced from every angle.

1. This course has changed the way that I view design because it has given me deeper knowledge about architecture, furniture design and many other things that tie into design. I see how design has changed over time and also why it has changed. With the invention of new procedures, machines, and occurrences of economic changes, design evolves and is affected directly. Though when design changes, it is usually reverting back to an earlier idea. It is strange to think of how the world changes drastically over time and design mostly cycles around itself. Granted there are substantial improvements in material based on available and affordable resources, but the concepts tend to be linked to the past. Design is how, where, and what we live in.

2. The library on the UNCG campus has a strong link to the past. It has the very traditional rotunda at the center of it where the “brain” of the library is. This part of the library is built of standard brick and fits in well with the rest of the University’s predominately brick buildings. The library does have two parts, though. The tower of the library is extremely modern in contrast to its counterpart. Because of this, the library speaks this language of wanting to keep its ties to tradition and culture while also trying to progress forward in design and styles.

3. Creating a new perspective that both embraces the past and says something innovative about the present almost comes natural. Past influences are unavoidable since they are visible, livable, and easy to research and find now a days. We will always have influences from the present, though. People are constantly trying to find ways to make things better, more affordable, more appealing, and more sustainable. That is what changes and influences designer’s decisions when they borrow ideas from past designs. It is what keeps designers from copying previous ideas. You can see this blending of ideas in places like churches where there are arches and columns outside, and flat screen monitors with modern spaces inside.

4. Backyard barbeques were much more low key in the 1960s than they are today. People would make grills out of bricks, spare barrels, or whatever was around. They would eat on picnic tables and they would all use charcoal to heat their grills. There were less expendables back then and therefore, the supplies were more limited. I don’t think that backyard barbeques have changed drastically since then except for the fact that we have better technology and more money to spend on equipment to make our backyard barbeques a more chic experience. Now it is almost just another way to show off nice stuff for company.

The use of color and light in our design emphasizes our intent to infuse the space with emotion. Our exterior has a strong horizontal language that is incorporated into the interior. These horizontals throughout the building reflect our idea of nature within and around the structure.

Individual Intent Description

The design for My Sister's House changed with each charrette that passed. After the light survey, we decided that we wanted the most windows to be on the East and West walls of the building. We also decided that the front should have the largest amount of windows, so we changed the orientation of the building so that the front was facing West. After neglecting to show the placement of the columns in our initial 1/4"=1'-0" design, we had to change the placement of some of the important parts of the interior. We were able to eliminate some of our walls since the columns separated space in a nice way by themselves. When we started to design our exterior, we really focused on the influence that the architects, artists, and designers that we researched had on us. We discussed colored tiles, windows that were very functional in terms of sight, and wanted to emphasize the embracing courtyard area with a change in vertical windows. To connect these buildings more, we created a curved walkway that provides patio area for some furniture that implies a hang-out space. After creating our moment, we realized that our ideas were not developed quite enough and that we were limiting ourselves within a space. This caused us to consider lowering the grade in the back of the building and opening up the basement so that we could create our moment outside of the building. Our horizontal bands of windows could be incorporated from our 1/8"=1'-0" model to the inside of the building where we could have weaving bands of walkways and halls and rooms. I see our project going in a direction of something unconventional and intriguing to the outside onlooker. I think that our space will be infused with emotion and have a warmth to it that is often lacking in public buildings. I am excited for the next step in this project.
